Mic of laptop is not working?

dear frnds mic of my laptop is not working its compaq laptop i went to service centre they said its not an hardware issue mic is ok and they suggested me to change the windows rit now its xp they asked me to install vista they said this laptop has been manufactured specially for vista so wat u think wat the problem may be behind not workin of mic and will it solve the problem to install vista.
